  4.     Since last June's crackdown on the student democracy movement,
  5. China has announced that it has put to death several dozen
  6. "counterrevolutionaries." The actual total may be much higher. In
  7. a telex to Chinese Premier Li Peng last week, Amnesty International
  8. called for an end to continuing secret executions that it termed
  9. "judicial killing." The human rights organization said it had
  10. evidence that the Chinese government had decided to shoot all
  11. prisoners charged with "most serious crimes" but to announce only
  12. enough deaths to intimidate would-be dissidents.

  14.     In its new research report on the suppression of the protests
  15. by the People's Liberation Army, Amnesty labeled the official
  16. government toll of 200 deaths a "gross underestimate." Citing
  17. reports from witnesses, Amnesty claimed that soldiers firing
  18. indiscriminately into crowds killed at least 1,000 civilians in
  19. Beijing and 300 in Chengdu. A government spokesman in Beijing said
  20. the charges were "entirely ungrounded" and that the demonstrators
  21. had used "terrorist means." Chinese embassies abroad released a
  22. grainy video presenting the official version with a narrator
  23. claiming that no one was killed in Tiananmen Square.
